We were in Petersburg, awaiting the arrival of our eldest daughter and her family later in the day, having taken our youngest daughter and her family to the airport the previous day. An early, brisk, 5 mile walk started my morning. Returning to the docks, in the now 12th day of rain, I encountered a slick, slippery, steep ramp to the docks - 160 degree angle - and down I went and my wrist bellowed a loud "pop" or maybe that was me bellowing.
Anyway, I was lucky, so the clinic/"hospital" told me, as their
orthopod - who only comes in 4 times a month or 4 times a year, somewhat
unclear here - was there! The rest of the time he works as a
commercial fisherman. Yes, a fisherman fixed my fracture. And
may I say it all seemed pretty medieval - I think he has spent too much
time at sea improvising medical equipment. There was traction, and
manipulation and, well... "ow" when he forced the bones back together.
I did have surgery in Seattle, which continues to have the best medical care in the country, and now I am recuperating at the home of friends. After the kids left, a friend of Jim's flew from Michigan to Ketchikan to help him bring the boat south. I hope to fly to BC to join them soon.
It was a wonderful summer and even though we didn't get to finish the trip the way we wanted, well, there's always next time.
